black leotard to ballet audition?
Question by goldilocks: black leotard to ballet audition?
so, i’m auditioning for a big national dance school and i want to look like a professional, serious student. some people have told me to wear a dark coloured leotard [black, navy or forest green,] whilst others, including one of my ballet teachers, have told me to wear a colour which really stands out [like red or purple.]
i’ll be wearing pink tights and shoes but is it best to wear something which will match the other girls or should i stand out? should i wear a strappy camisole leotard or a tank leotard? also, is it worth wearing a ballet wrap skirt or anything?

Well, unless they say otherwise, your safest bet would be a black leotard. Some schools will not let you audition if you have something that stands out too much. The point of the audition is for them to see your dancing and technique, it may become difficult for them to judge you or other girls because of a distracting leotard.
I would recommend a camisole leotard, however a tank should be fine.
You should not wear anything other than leotard, tights, and shoes. A ballet skirt is not very professional and they need to see all of your muscles working.
Basic rules are also that you wear your hair in a very neat ballet bun, no jewelry, and make sure you are not chewing gum or anything else. Also, you should stay clear of hair scrunchies to put on your bun. They do not look very professional either.
Good luck.

Comments on black leotard to ballet audition?
Well, if you wear the basic black leotard you will look more serious. Have you seen pictures for the dance school at all? Even in an information booklet or something, you might have seen a picture of girls practicing in black leotards (in which case black would be best.)
If you aren’t going to wear black, navy and dark green will not stand out, but also are not black. Try standing out in other ways, like an elegant bun and try to make your dancing stand out.
Bring an easy-to-dance-in ballet wrap skirt, but maybe take it off while auditioning (see what the others do.)
I always had to wear a black leotard and pink tights and shoes with no skirt for ballet.
I gave a thumbs-up to GreenLettuce. An audition for a big national dance school is NOT the place to stand out with your dance attire. My guess is that the ballet teacher who told you otherwise did not dance professionally or attend a big national dance school and instead attended a competition studio. The world of professional ballet and the world of competition dance are totally different and adhere to different codes of conduct.
If you want to look like a professional, serious student, my advice to you is this: know that you are being observed from the moment the audition staff lay eyes on you. Have your paperwork ready (resume, application, photo, audition fee, etc) before entering the audition location and approach the sign-in table by yourself without your parent or guardian and interact with the staff in a mature manner, thus showing that you are ready to live independently. During the audition, keep your focus on the teacher and demonstrate that you are eager and open to the movement. Having your arms crossed in front of you, rolling your eyes, slouching, etc, all project that you are feeling uncomfortable. You will stand out by being alert and taking corrections quickly.
