There is growing concern about the levels of obesity in people of all ages today. It is recognised that excess weight can lead to health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and gall bladder disease, to name just three. Large numbers of people are now striving to get fit and healthy, and are realising that the longer you are out of shape, the longer it can take to rectify. Possibly the most alarming trend is for children to be overweight or obese, and parents and schools are now fighting to prevent this problem getting any worse. There are numerous reasons for youngsters gaining excess weight – many eat too much junk food and spend too much time indoors watching the television set or playing on computer/video games. Increasingly, parents and guardians are afraid to let their children play outside unattended due to traffic and crime, but more and more are realising that there are safer methods for kids to stay in top form.

For better or for worse, lots of young people aspire to be like celebrities. Many yearn to learn how to play musical instruments or to dance professionally. This enthusiasm may not lead them to a life of fame and fortune, but encouraging creative and athletic pursuits of children is very important for their health and development. Dance lessons come in all styles and are appreciated by children and parents from all walks of life. These lessons can boost a youngster’s confidence and help them to make friends with similar interests, at the same time as helping them stay in shape. In order for a child to attend dance lessons, they will need to have the appropriate children’s dancewear.

The kind of children’s dancewear needed will depend on the style of dance being learned. Ballet requires special slippers, leotards, tutus and tights. Some of these cross over to different dances, for example leotards and tights, but footwear varies considerably between tap, jazz and many modern styles. The main purpose of specific children’s dancewear is to keep the wearer safe and to enable them to perform moves unhindered. Some items of children’s dancewear are maybe not the first to spring to mind – in addition to the larger items of clothing, dancers may well require hair bands, leg warmers and ribbons. Always check with a dance tutor or dance school before selecting dance clothing, as many have specific uniforms.

For those looking for a fun and safe way for children to exercise under adult supervision, dance classes are certainly a popular option. Kids love to dance and express themselves through creativity and music. They will also learn a certain amount about optimum nutrition – responsible dancers eat well and stay healthy. Dance can be a passion which is enjoyed for life, and those who start at a young age have a greater chance of making a career out of this skill.
